2020 NRC of S Autumn Meeting at Blair Atholl

Meeting Report

Only ten members met at Blair over the weekend of 12/13 September for the autumn meeting, partly because of Covid disruption, partly because of competition from the replacement TR Imperial at Bisley the same weekend. We were joined by F Class competitors, Messrs Inglis and Sandie. To comply with Covid requirements the meeting was not squadded, with single firers for each target, string shooting.

The weather forecast was awful. High winds and a yellow warning of rain, a million miles from Bisley where the TR shooters basked in 30 degree heat. In the event we escaped the worst of the weather. Saturday was bright and sunny with enough showers to require the gazebos to be erected at all distances. Winds were light but very testing with no possibles at any range. The overnight leader board had Keith Baxby, at the top of his form, first from Mike Buchanan and Tim Kidner.

Very heavy rain passed through on Saturday night and Sunday dawned still and overcast, ideal midge conditions, but few were to be seen, to general relief. Again, the winds were tricky especially at 1233 yards where they roamed from left to right irrespective as to what the flags were saying. English visitors Alex Cargill Thompson and Julian Peck had outstanding shoots at 1233 yards with 99.12 and 98.13, and Keith had once again shown us how to do it with a 98.12 at 1114 yards, only to be visited by nemesis at 1233 with a low magpie.

In the end Tim Kidner was the overall winner with 423.35, from Mike Buchanan on 422.35, Alex Cargill Thompson on 422.30 and in fourth place Keith Baxby on 421.31. Tim took the Maxwell and the Sandeman, and Keith the Brown Tankard and the Maitland Cup. Scoring was very tight, with two points in the first four.

Our thanks to Tim Kidner for a very well organised event, particularly as he was then escaping south to complete the TR meeting at Bisley, and as always our appreciation to WARC for the ability to use this wonderful range and to WARC Secretary Ron Scaglione for organising targetry, all of which worked seamlessly.
