NRC of S Spring Meeting - 2019

Match Report

19 members of the NRCofS including two F Class shooters met at Blair Atholl on 25th and 26th May for the Spring Meeting with two Irish visitors. Broken cloud and easy winds on Saturday made for some high scores at 987. There were three of 100 and no less than eight of 99, many kicking themselves they dropped that one. Then came the rain that never stopped until the end of the individual competitions at lunch time on Sunday. Sodden flags, poor visibility and flicking winds were the order of the day and only Mark Crichton Maitland made 100 at 1114. 1233 was more of the same and the 99s made by Messrs Scaglione, Wentjes and Kidner were more than respectable. The Saturday Aggregate was headed by Mark Crichton Maitland, with Allan Campbell-Smith in second and Michael Wentjes in third.

Sunday dawned wet with added wind, although it rarely showed on the flags and the plots started to display the usual Blair pattern with a good collection of Atholl crows. Thanks were offered for the existence of the gazebos, without which a disorderly retreat from the hill would have been the order of the day.

Iain Thomson had an exceptional Sunday shoot with 75 at both 1114 and 1233, won the Sunday Aggregate and came second overall. Ron Scaglione won the 1200 yard Aggregate and came third overall. Allan Campbell-Smith won the Grand Aggregate with 442.47 ahead of 441.57 and 441.56. Michael Wentjes carried off the Visitors Trophy and Mark Crichton Maitland the Craigfillan Tyro Trophy.

Although the rain stopped before the start of the team competition, now in its second year, it was decided to restrict shooting to 1233 yards. Team selection was by top and bottom slicing the Saturday Aggregate and six teams competed for the Tilt Trophy. 15 shots and no sighters. At this point, with the change in the weather the resident spirits of Glen Tilt awoke with a vengeance like a poked wasps nest. Wailing and gnashing of teeth ensued, as when right hand flags corrected to three or more minutes of left wind. Winners were Angus McLeod and Clare Halleran, with Buchanan-Maitland-Roberts in second place even though Mark Crichton Maitland coached his predecessor to his lowest Tilt score for many years.
